Boeing Co.’s military space business traditionally has centered on hardware manufacturing, but company officials believe the future lies in networks that will enable space and terrestrial platforms to operate as a single, integrated system.
The market for such networks could be worth $27 billion annually by the end of this decade, Tom Gathmann, manager of strategic planning and investments at Boeing Space and Communications Group, told reporters during a June 18 briefing at the company’s Anaheim, Calif., facility.
Boeing intends to address that market with what the company is calling its Integrated Battlespace business. Gathmann said Integrated Battlespace will be Boeing Space and Communications Group’s primary business in the coming years, surpassing the company’s work as prime contractor on the Pentagon’s national missile defense system.
