Financials: Space-derived
revenue at Mitsubishi Heavy Industries slipped to $368 million last year,
or only 1.5 percent of the manufacturing giant's overall income, hurt by
a general downturn in the Japanese launch industry climate.
Space Business: Part
of the Mitsubishi keiretsu or corporate network (as is Mitsubishi
Electric Corp.), Mitsubishi Heavy Industries is the leading manufacturer
of Japanese rockets and rocket engines.
As the primary Japanese contractor
to the International Space Station, the company will be responsible for
building KIBO (the Japanese Experiment Module) and the automated HTV supply
transfer vehicle. Once scheduled to join the ISS in 2002-3, the planned
launch of these components have been pushed back to 2004.
Mitsubishi Heavy Industries
is actively developing a number of reusable launch vehicle designs.
