The Presidents Commission on Moon, Mars, and Beyond will report its findings at a Noon press conference on Wednesday, June 16The Presidents Commission on Moon, Mars, and Beyond will report its findings at a Noon press conference on Wednesday, June 16. The report had originally been scheduled for release June 10 but was delayed because of the activities in Washington in honor of former U.S. President Ronald Reagan, Commission spokeswoman Susan Flowers said June 7. The commission worked with the White House on the revised timing and the actual time and date for the rescheduled press conference was released yesterday. The 60-page report will contain recommendations on how to implement the space exploration vision laid out by President George W. Bush in a Jan. 14 speech at NASA headquarters. Bush set a goal of returning to the moon by 2020 with the longer term goal of sending humans to Mars. He also called for completing the international space station in 2010 and then retiring the space shuttle fleet. The commission, headed by former U.S. Air Force Secretary Edward (Pete) Aldridge, gathered public testimony during hearings held in Washington, New York, Atlanta, San Francisco and Dayton, Ohio. It held its last hearing April 28. The June 16 press conference will be held at the Jack Morton Auditorium of George Washington University in Washington D.C., and the report will be posted simultaneously to the commission's Web site, www.moontomars.org.
